USING DELICIOUS GREENS IN HOME STYLING
GREEN? YOU MIGHT BE THINKING WHY GREEN AND NOT ANY OTHER COLOR?
Well, since St Patrick's is approaching and there are so many colors we could write about - I thought this would be a good time to write about how to decorate with green and how I have used it and/or suggested its use.First of all, let’s be honest. Green is one of those colors that you either like it or hate it. Some people are afraid of green or the commitment to such a strong color. For any color, there are beautiful inspiring shades of green and then there are the not so beautiful shades of green.
Why use green? Might you ask, well I am a great believer in bringing the outside in and extending the living space to the outside? Besides, here are just a few notes on the psychology of Green based on a publication by empower-yourself-with color found online.The color green relates to balance and harmony. Green is considered a balancer of emotions between the head and the heart. Green is also the color of growth, spring and of renewal and rebirth. Green can replenish depleted energy and green is a calming color. For example; when you see a mountainside, or a field and all its shades of green don’t you feel certain serenity? So if you like green or you are about to decide on a color that inspires you, a color that perhaps can give you energy and a sense of rebirth – for a room that has lost its luster. Then go for it, go for green. If you are worried about making a mistake start small, get just a couple of green decorative pillows live with them for a while see how you feel.
GO BOLD: HOW TO DECORATE WITH GREEN IN STYLE
I have put this experiment to the test with several clients, and ultimately the color ends up growing on them so much so that they begin to expand their “green” use.Green I see lending itself to modern, traditional, transitional and all other design styles in between. But let’s take Green for a moment and see how we can use it sparingly and see how you feel about it. Ultimately, connecting with how you feel with a color, texture, pattern, shape is what is important. Be very aware of the feeling certain things evoke in you.
DECORATING WITH GREEN: BOLD FRONT DOOR
In this first image below courtesy of Pinterest, the front door in this very appealing entrance is green and if you were not looking at the photo, you may think a green front door? But once we see the photo and the background for the green door, the plants in those beautiful pots, the neutral concrete pavers the brass hardware and dark light fixture – the green chosen for the door is almost the same blue-green as the leaves of the lavender and other plants in those lovely containers.There are variations of green but they all work together even with the blue pots because this composition inspires calmness and cool shades. The blue pots complement the green on the door and the plants.
DECORATING WITH GREEN AS AN ACCENT COLOR
Another way to use green without it becoming overwhelming is in small doses as an accent color. Perhaps, as mentioned before on a couple of decorative pillows, or a throw but also recalling the green by adding plants. Greenery in a space always gives a sense of life, another layer of texture and another way to bring in the outside inside.
In the bedroom, picture green is used cleverly and sparingly. The bed skirt is stylized flower pattern in a lovely shade of green, then that shade of green was reduced in saturation and repeated on the chair and on the piping of the cushion. Note how there is a lot of white on the bedding and the walls and then there are pops of black. The bed frame, the hardware on the nightstand, the lamp – black seems to make green richer and the white just makes it look fresh and open. The shams are made of the same pattern as the bed skirt tying it all together. These colors make this room really fresh, open, and appealing and if I may say so stunning.
DECORATE WITH A BOLD GREEN STATEMENT PIECE (LIKE A SOFA)
If you are brave and are not afraid of commitment here are a few sofas in green that would make a statement in any room. All it requires is the right setting, the right wall color, and accessories and a green sofa will be definitely become a conversation piece.Number 1 is Rich sophisticated and I envisioned a very classy room with gorgeous artwork on the walls and lots of gold accessories. Number 2 on the other hand is also rich but brighter, a bit more of a wow- which I would say without overthinking it too much this would be great in a more casual setting, perhaps a room where the owner is not afraid of color at all and paired with other pops of color in the room. Number 3 is a more blue-green, perhaps in an office or reading room. I would pair it up with a lovely pearly rug and add brushed gold coffee and side tables. Number 4 more or less the same, but may be in a more traditional setting. 5, 6 & 7 are all pretty modern lines and each one could be the piece of resistance in a loft, in a house with a great room; but for all of these amazing sofas, the accessories and the backdrop will really complement these stunning shades of lovely green.
On the picture from Home & Garden, we see blue greens, a sage green a white with a soft hint of green and then Eucalyptus green. LOVE! Not only does it smell divine but also the softness of this shade of green is so calming, it is easy on the eye and it gives you the opportunity to add some blues and soft grays too. Artwork with black frame and a white matting.Try it. Now day’s strong greens paired with brushed gold hardware or fixtures are hot. This composition reminds me of a lovely library room and or an upscale seating area.
